I am so pleased that talented artist Luna North will be leading workshops at the second ANOGM@Boconnoc retreat. An artist fully grounded and inspired by nature, Luna will be showing our retreat attendees how to capture inspiration from the world around us.

Luna says:

I am an artist living on Exmoor in Devon with my partner Robin. My studio is a converted room in our house, full of light with a view of the moor. We keep a no-dig veggie patch where I am trying to encourage wild flowers to mingle with the vegetables.

I studied a Fine Art Degree at Falmouth University, where I painted large scale pictures of the landscape. My joy of being in nature has stayed with me ever since and my present artworks include the wild landscapes of Exmoor and botanical paintings of the flowers I see in the woods and hedgerows.

I find walking, sitting and picnicking on Exmoor uplifting and inspirational. I try to get up there two or three times a week and take that opportunity to sketch and photograph subjects which in turn fuels my creativity.

For as long as I can remember I have really enjoyed working with my hands and making things. I mainly work with acrylic paint and linocut printing and love the craft of colour mixing and pattern making.

I hope my artwork contains some of my fascination with nature and the peace I derive from it.

Luna’s Creative Workshops

First: Finding inspiration in the colours, shapes and patterns of nature. A creative walk in the grounds of Boconnoc.

During this session my aim is to help you gain ideas for colour combinations to inspire all of your creative endeavours, whether it is gardening, knitting, weaving, decorating or painting. I want to create an atmosphere in this environment where we can meander, dawdle and pause together in nature. We will tune into the plants, colours and atmosphere of the beautiful grounds.

I will share with you how I approach taking nature photographs for my work. You will only need your mobile phone camera to do this.

We will explore taking written notes and making quick sketches. There is no emphasis on accurate drawing, this will be a nature diary for you. Making notes on nature can be very relaxing. The added bonus us that you are creating a memory trigger for the next class on colour, painting and your future projects.

I really cannot emphasis how important and central to my work my nature walks are, a steadying bridge to make my artwork. You are most welcome to join me and just enjoy the walk too.

Second Workshop: Colour Play and Painting

In this workshop you will use your sketch notes from the previous session to create nature inspired colour abstract paintings.

As part of my art practice I spend time exploring colour and mixing new colour palettes that express a particular moment in nature. The way the tart green of wood sorrel contrasts with the burnished leaves of the woodland floor, or the way that the greens of plant leaves have warm and cool tones that glow beside each other.

You are invited to pick up some colour mixing tips and create your own abstract grid paintings.

You will be equipped with mini packs of paints and brushes to do the workshop and you will be welcome to take them home with you. Additional materials may be available from Luna at the retreat also. If you haven’t picked up a paintbrush for a long time, that’s fine! The creative path we follow is really gentle and fun.

The joy of creating colour grids or patterns is in the mixing of interesting colours and seeing how they come alive next to each other. At home you can use these mini paintings to inspire new projects or put them into frames to admire

Charlotte’s Creative workshop

Using aspects of your learning with Luna, we will play with colour in tapestry weaving! I will teach you the basics of tapestry weaving on small, ready warped tapestry frame looms and we will play with a rainbow of tapestry wools!

We will work on each making a small abstract woven tapestry using fluid lines and complimentary and contrasting colours, grounded in the beauty of nature. This class is suitable for tapestry weaving beginners, we are looking to have fun with colour and shape, not aiming for perfection.
