Retreat One: Saturday 16th to Tuesday 19th October 2021
We are delighted to welcome the wonderful textile artist Louisa Loakes to the first ANOGM @ Boconnoc retreat.
Louisa’s work blends elements from her fine art practice and her intuitive approach to textiles. During her time studying at Wimbledon School of Art, Louisa developed a particular interest in Abstract painting, which continues to ground and guide her work across a range of mediums.
Working from her studio in Peckham, Louisa’s practice is focused on the beautifully simple, slow art of hand-carved block printing. Having spent many years researching the craft, she draws particular inspiration from the processes involved in traditional Indian block printing, and her practice interweaves Eastern folk art traditions with forms and patterns familiar to western languages of abstraction. As a self-taught block printer, she approaches fabric like a painting – or one of her charcoal drawings – creating delicate, twisting patterns that repeat themselves across its surface. Distinctive in their simple use of geometric form, monochromatic palette and signature dash of hand-painted colour, Louisa’s hand-carved block printed patterns are charged with a human touch, the irregularities that appear in the printing process giving each piece a distinct energy and identity.
Louisa’s current collection of textiles, including quilts, cushions and bags, can be found at The New Craftsman in Mayfair and at http://louisaloakes.com/. Her website and Instagram are also regularly updated with current projects, more information about her studio practice, and upcoming workshops.
Louisa’s Creative Workshops:
Sunday Session:Pattern Play
In this 3hr session participants will gain a basic understanding of the technique of block printing onto fabric; taking away with them multiple pattern samples that they have created.
We will begin with a group introduction and a brief introduction from Louisa about her background as an artist block printer.
Then we will take a look at examples of traditional Indian Block Printing and other artist block printers such as Barron & Larcher and Enid Marx. Looking at examples of block printed pattern and books for reference.
Potato printing will then be the focus of our printing for the day. We will begin by exploring the possibilities of one given design carved from potato. Progressing from what you have just learnt from this exercise you will then cut your own design and discover your own pattern using potatoes and other household items, exploring pattern and scale.
Monday Session:Block Making & Printing
In this 3hr session participants will create their own pattern and carve their own MDF backed lino block. Louisa will guide you through working with the tools to achieve your pattern. With your block you will have a chance to play and develop your own pattern repeat, experimenting first on calico before finally progressing to printing a length onto a natural linen fabric.
Charlotte’s Creative Workshop
In the final of our workshops for Retreat One, We will take one of the pieces of block printed fabric that you have created with Louisa, and stitch it into a beautiful notions pouch. We will use wool felt and block printed calico or linen, with maybe a hand stitched embellishment or two, to create a very special object you will be able to use for years to come.
