Retreat One: Monday 24th-Thursday 27th October 2022
Patterns and Printmaking Inspired by Nature with Luna North
Over the course of two workshops, Luna will teach us how to get inspired by the shapes found in nature, enabling us to use our designs to make beautiful linocut prints.
Luna will lead the group on a ‘pattern hunt’ down to the lake at Boconnoc to see the water birds and wildflower seed-heads. She will show you how to use your mobile phone camera to best capture the scenes and detail that you want to record. She will help you get immersed in the experience; breathing in nature and seeking out interesting plant shapes.
Back in the studio you will begin to make playful designs using pencil, pen and collage as a preparation for the print making session.
During Session Two, Luna will show you how to use your designs and photos to make linocut stamps. If you haven’t done linocut before then you are in for a treat. If you have some experience of printing then it’s a chance to create more complex patterns and arrangements.
In a third workshop during the retreat, we will show you how to make your own hand bound simple book, which you can embellish with the stamp that Luna has inspired you to make.
All materials for the class will be provided. You will need to have a camera- a fully charged phone camera will be fine for this purpose, but you are welcome to bring a more sophisticated camera too.
Luna works from her studio in Devon, with her practice focussed on her poetic, delicately coloured prints and paintings of the flora and fauna of Exmoor. Looking at her artwork evokes the feeling of nature nourishing your soul.
During her time at Falmouth School of Art, Luna specialised in painting, printmaking and photography. She is a widely exhibited artist who brings years of experience and a natural warmth to her teaching.
Luna featured on the Channel Four TV programme “Devon and Cornwall” where the crew followed her creative journey, drawing and painting on Exmoor.
Retreat Two: Thursday 27th- Sunday 30th October 2022
Visible Mending, Darning and Gentle Hand-Sewing with Charlotte Jenner
Over the course of three workshops we will dive deep into mending our clothes. I will lead you through the techniques of visible mending using sewing techniques and darning knitted and woven garments. We will have the luxury of time to learn the basics and then to get started on mending some loved items of clothing that you will have brought along. In addition, we will spend time hand-sewing and will hand sew a small item such as a notions pouch or maybe a modern day ‘portable pocket’.
We will have hours to sit sewing, darning and mending clothes together. This will be a very relaxed retreat where once we have worked on some initial samples, we will respond to what has been brought along and we can support each other on our mending journey.
The classes will be taught by A Nest of Gentle Makers founder, Charlotte Jenner. I am a very keen mender and ‘a-mender’ of clothes. I would rather attempt a messy mend or an uncertain adaptation of something that is not being worn, than have it wallow in the back of the wardrobe, or go to landfill.
I am an avid maker of all things and have been mending my clothes for many years. I am not an invisible, perfect, french polish type of mender; instead I think that mending should be visible and celebrated. A doctor by training and working part-time now, I really enjoy the individual challenge of each mend and working with what we have to find solutions.
I will arm you with the tools and the basic knowledge to start mending and then we can work together to help breathe life back into your worn out clothes. All materials will be provided for the workshops. There may be the opportunity to buy additional materials and tools from me, if you wish.
Included in each retreat:
3 night’s luxury accommodation in a double/twin bedroom with sole occupancy (unless sharing).
